USA women's soccer earn first win 1-0 over Japan
The women's soccer team from the USA United States earned its first win of the 2008 Olympics tournament with a 1-0 win over Japan in Group G action Saturday at the Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.
Midfielder Carli Lloyd scored the decisive goal in the 27th minute to pace the Americans, who failed to display their usual dominance against international competition for a second straight contest.
Lloyd volleyed a cross from defender Stephanie Cox just under the crossbar for the winner, which helped the USA to three points.
The USA dropped its first soccer game of the tournament on Thursday as Norway struck for two goals in the game's first four minutes and hung on for the victory.
The USA will play its final group match on Tuesday against New Zealand in Shenyang, while Japan, which has one point, will face Norway in Shanghai.
